Bukit Aman: Over RM260mil lost to commercial crime this year

KUALA LUMPUR: Over RM260mil have been lost to commercial crimes so far this year, says Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf (pic).

The Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director said as of Feb 2, a total of 5,153 cases have been recorded.

"While it showed a 26% increase compared to 4,088 cases during the same period last year, the amount of losses have lessened some 7% compared to RM279.8mil (last year)," he said when contacted on Friday (Feb 7).

Comm Ramli said online scams contributed to the biggest number of commercial crime cases.

"4,532 online scams have been recorded this year, which is 87.9% of total commercial crime cases.

"The number of losses (from online scams) have reached RM195.3mil (75% of total commercial crime cases).

"We expect this trend will continue to rise in the coming weeks," he said.

Of the online scams, telecommunication scams recorded the most number of cases with 1,988 cases recorded involving RM49.6mil in losses, Comm Ramli said.

"This is followed by purchase scams (912 cases, RM6.2mil)., investment scams (765 cases, RM125.7mil), loan scams (512 cases, RM3.7mil), e-commerce scams (253 cases, RM5.2mil) and love scams (102 cases, RM4.9mil).

"Investment scams recorded the highest number of losses this year with RM125.7mil," he said.

The CCID has nabbed 2,523 individuals through 2,443 operations nationwide, he said.

"It has led to 1,315 successful prosecutions," he added.
