Asean to issue statement against Trump’s proposal to remove Palestinians from Gaza, says Tok Mat

KUALA LUMPUR: Asean will issue a joint statement against the proposal to remove Palestinians from Gaza, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

The Foreign Minister said that Malaysia, as Chair of Asean, strongly disagreed with the proposal saying that the suggestion is “outside of a sane mind”.

“Malaysia truly regrets the announcement to remove Palestinians (from Gaza).

“We’re against the recommendation as it is out of sane mind and against all international conventions, charters and treaties,” he said during the Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Feb 6).

Mohamad said that he had discussed the matter with his Asean counterparts who also disagreed with the announcement.

“We (Asean) will issue a joint statement after receiving consensus from all members.

“However, for Malaysia, we strongly oppose any suggestion that doesn’t make sense to remove Palestinians from their homeland and place them in a third country,” he said.

He was earlier responding to a supplementary question by Datuk Seri Mohd Shahar Abdullah (BN-Paya Besar) who had asked the minister to state Malaysia’s stand on the recent announcement to remove Palestinians from Gaza.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul acknowledged the urgency for Malaysia to address the issue.

On Tuesday, US president Donald Trump proposed the permanent resettlement of more than two million Palestinians from Gaza to neighbouring countries.
