MBPP official remanded over free homestay bribe

GEORGE TOWN: A director of a Penang Island City Council (MBPP) department has been remanded for five days for allegedly taking a bribe in the form of a free homestay holiday.

The 42-year-old man was detained with the 37-year-old company director who allegedly offered the bribe to secure a landscaping project.

The two men were brought to court here on Wednesday (Feb 5) in orange lock-up attire and wearing face masks.

Magistrate Mohamad Azlan Basri then issued the remand order following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

The five-day remand until Sunday (Feb 9) is to facilitate investigations under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.

It is believed that the bribe was in the form of a homestay, valued at RM2,420, in Tanjung Tokong in January last year.
