Sabah MPs agree with King’s call to avoid petty issues

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah MPs backed the King’s call to stop politicising every petty issue and to prioritise the country’s pressing needs.

Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau said petty issues should not dominate discussions in Parliament when the nation was facing major issues such as national and household debt.

“I agree (with the King’s call), especially on MPs who jump into petty racial issues.

“The nation is being confronted with huge national and household debt. Basic infrastructures in Sabah and Sarawak are still a major challenge and more should be done to address regional development imbalance,” Madius said.

Kinabatangan MP Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said MPs should stay away from minor issues as it would only derail the government’s focus on resolving major issues facing the country.

“As MPs, we know the principles of Rukun Negara and what is stated in the Federal Constitution. As such, we should be guided by these principles,” he said.

Penampang MP Datuk Ewon Benedick said he maintained his stand not to be dragged into political arguments over petty issues.

“I have focused on the mandate and responsibility given to me,” said Ewon, who is also Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister.

He said that apart from implementing policies outlined by his ministerial responsibility, he is also co-chairman of the Intervention Monitoring Committee to oversee delayed and sick federal projects in Sabah.

“I am also focused on solutions to overcome hardcore poverty in Sabah that started with the Ehsan@Kuskop programme implemented in Kudat, Kota Marudu and Kota Belud,” said Ewon.

In his royal address at the opening of the First Meeting of the Fourth Session of the 15th Parliament yesterday, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, emphasised that Parliament is a distinguished institution dedicated to debating the agenda of the people’s interests and the country’s prosperity, adding that MPs must stop politicising every issue.
