PETALING JAYA: Differences in religion and culture are no barrier for Junaidah Ibrahim, her husband Azizi Abu Bakar and their children to celebrate Chinese New Year with her elder sister, who is Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong's mother.
The MCA president, in a Facebook post Friday (Jan 31), said the differences were not a barrier for his mother and aunt to meet during Chinese New Year in Melaka.
"The two-hour visit further strengthened the bond between the two sisters in celebration of the Year of the Snake.
"The age-gap between them is 20 years," the Ayer Hitam MP said.
Dr Wee said that prior to the visit, his aunt and her family had visited his grandfather’s house in Tangkak to meet their other siblings.
He said since reuniting with her biological family, his aunt has made it a tradition to visit her siblings every Chinese New Year.
Dr Wee explained that his mother has 16 siblings.
"She was adopted by a Chinese family in Melaka, while my aunt was raised by a Malay family," he said.
Wee said his aunt's wish to find her biological father finally came true in 1998.
He said what made it even more touching was that her adoptive Muslim parents had always encouraged her to search for her biological father, despite the challenges she faced along the way.
"Sadly, after the Chinese New Year celebration in 2000, my grandfather passed away," he said in his post.
Dr Wee also added that whether it was a wedding or the passing of a family member, the siblings of different faiths always stood together.
He also said the strong family spirit had never faded, and hoped it would continue to grow from generation to generation.
