TITI: Voters should use the Aug 1 Negri Sembilan polls to tell Putrajaya that rising electricity, fuel and cooking gas costs have become unbearable, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The MCA president, campaigning for Barisan Nasional's Chennah candidate Siow Kong Choon, said households had watched their electricity bills climb over the past three months despite assurances that most consumers would be shielded.
"They told me 85% are not affected but the people are not stupid," he said at a ceramah here on Thursday (July 23).
Dr Wee also questioned the timing of the RM2.10 subsidised diesel price.
"Because of elections in Johor and Negri Sembilan – can a state election change a government decision?" he said.
On the Budi95 petrol subsidy, he said using the average consumption amount to justify cutting the monthly quota from 300 litres to 200 litres was misleading because motorcycles make up the bulk of vehicles on the road.
"Your motorcycle cannot use up even 100 litres," he said, adding that the percentages quoted by the government kept shifting.
He said a hawker spoke to him at a food court to complain about the cost of cooking gas, saying he would have to raise the price of each plate of noodles by RM1.
On the Negri Sembilan government's record, Dr Wee said the state's economic growth had slowed sharply even though it is next to Kuala Lumpur and questioned its performance since Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan stepped down as Mentri Besar.
Dr Wee said Chinese voters were under no obligation to hand DAP a clean sweep and urged support for Siow, who is in a straight fight against Anthony Loke Siew Fook, a seat the DAP secretary-general has held since 2013.
