Sabah govt allocates RM250mil to build 3,000 affordable houses this year

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government is doubling its affordable housing budget to build around 3,000 houses this year.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the budget this year has been increased to RM250mil to build affordable houses under the Rumah Mesra Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) initiative.

Stressing that all government policies and programmes must be people-centric, he stressed the importance of ensuring every segment of society benefited from development initiatives, particularly through the provision of comfortable housing for low and middle-income groups.

Since the Rumah Mesra SMJ initiative began in 2022, 4,482 units have been built under the low-cost and affordable public housing programme as of October last year, he said.

His speech was delivered by Assistant Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Isnin Aliasnih at the launch of the Sabah People's Housing Scheme (SRRS) at the 360 Boulevard Bundusan project site in Penampang on Sunday (Jan 26).

Hajiji said that property development is a key economic driver, as it stimulates the entire supply chain, from planning and construction to sales and occupancy, spurring economic activities across various sectors, including construction, finance, retail, transportation, and technology.

He said the official launch of SRRS marks a significant milestone in the state government’s efforts to drive economic growth while enhancing homeownership.

The scheme, he added, aligns with the government’s vision to ensure every Sabahan can own a home.

However, with the rising cost of living, many face difficulties in purchasing a home, especially in major urban areas like Kota Kinabalu.

“The launch of this innovative housing scheme will reshape homeownership in Sabah. This initiative will benefit 10,000 eligible Sabahans, enabling them to purchase their first home in key urban locations for no more than RM500,000, with simplified entry requirements.

“The state government, through the Finance Ministry and Sabah Credit Corporation as the sole primary financier, will work closely with CFS Usaha Tegas to refine and develop the housing framework,” he added.

Hajiji urged eligible Sabahans to seize this opportunity, noting the scheme’s benefits, including lower and fixed interest rates, extended repayment periods, 100% full loans, and a special repayment plan.

He also said the scheme would cultivate a sense of responsibility and aspiration among young people to own their homes.

Expressing gratitude to local developers supporting the initiative, Hajiji acknowledged Borneo Kemuncak Riang, which has offered Boulevard 360 Bundusan as the first SRRS project.

“I hope this scheme fosters greater collaboration between the state government and developers to meet the housing needs of all income groups in Sabah,” he said.
