PETALING JAYA: Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic is taking legal action against AirAsia for using his iconic mural of children on a bicycle, painted in Penang, as livery on one of its aircraft without his consent.
In a Facebook post titled “AirAsia Update: It’s Time to Talk”, Zacharevic said the airline’s final offer failed to “reflect the value” of his work, despite his efforts to seek an amicable resolution. He added that AirAsia also failed to address repeated unauthorised use of his artwork in its promotional materials.
“Two months ago, I posted a video of an AirAsia aircraft featuring my mural—used without my consent. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time,” Zacharevic wrote on Friday (Jan 24).
“Over the years, my murals have appeared in AirAsia’s email campaigns, advertisements, in-flight magazines, and more—all without proper credit, consent, or compensation.
“This repeated behaviour sets a harmful precedent—that artists’ work can be exploited without consequence. It’s not just about me—it affects the entire artistic community,” he said.
Zacharevic noted that he has attempted to resolve the matter professionally, but AirAsia’s response has been unsatisfactory.
“AirAsia’s response has followed a familiar pattern—issuing statements, denying past infringements, and prolonging discussions. Their final offer fails to reflect the value of my work, leaving me no choice but to pursue legal action.”
The artist also welcomed questions and comments from the public before he files his case.
“Once I file the case, I won’t be able to comment further. If you have questions or want to join this important conversation, now is the time,” he said, adding that he anticipates a lengthy legal process and appreciates the support of his fans.
On Nov 24, Zacharevic brought attention to the issue in an Instagram story that has since gone viral. He posted a photo of the plane with the caption “I think we need to talk...” and tagged both AirAsia and its founder, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.
The mural in question, originally painted in 2012, is one of several works by Zacharevic that have become synonymous with the George Town Heritage Site in Penang.
