TNB to engage property owners stuck with hefty bills due to crypto mining tenants

IPOH: Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) hopes to engage with the affected property owners who are required to pay hefty bills due to illegal electricity connections by tenants engaged in cryptocurrency mining activities.

TNB said officials have contacted the office of Gopeng MP Tan Kar Hing with a plan to engage with each affected property owner to find an amicable solution.

“Additionally, we would like to remind property owners to submit a Change of Tenancy (COT) request with TNB whenever new tenants occupy their premises.

“This will help prevent future disputes or liabilities related to electricity accounts,” TNB said in a statement on Thursday (Jan 23).

On Wednesday (Jan 22), Tan during a press conference said more than 60 homeowners and shoplot owners have fallen victim to TNB bills worth millions due to illegal electricity connections by tenants engaged in cryptocurrency mining activities.

He said the victims who reported to his office, are residents within the Gopeng constituency, as well as from Manjung and Setiawan.

He noted that the total claims range from RM30,000 to as much as RM1.2mil.

TNB in the statement added that for billing and account-related questions, the public could contact them via a private message on Facebook TNB Careline (available 24/7) or call 1-300-88-5454 from 8am to 7pm (Monday-Friday) or 8am to 5pm on weekends and public holidays.
