KOTA KINABALU: The United States’ decision to lower its travel advisory for Sabah signals growing international confidence in the state's security and stability, state officials said.
State Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin, in a statement on Thursday (Sept 3), welcomed the US Embassy’s update, which placed most of Sabah under Level 1 ("Exercise normal precautions"). Eastern coastal islands and maritime areas remain under Level 2 ("Exercise increased caution").
The adjustment follows a similar decision by Japan in June, which downgraded its travel warning for Eastern Sabah's coastal areas from Level 2 to Level 1, and reduced its advisory for several eastern islands from Level 3 ("Avoid all travel") to Level 2.
Jafry attributed the revised ratings to security operations led by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM), the Royal Malaysia Police, the Armed Forces, and the Maritime Enforcement Agency.
“We extend our deepest appreciation to all security personnel for their continued dedication to protecting Sabah’s people, visitors and tourism areas,” he said.
He urged other foreign governments to reassess their travel warnings accordingly, noting that the relaxed advisories are expected to increase tourist arrivals, improve airline connectivity, and spur local economic growth ahead of the Visit Sabah 2027 campaign.
