KOTA KINABALU: Sandakan Rainforest Park has been closed to the public after a landslide close to an electrical grid line, the Sabah Forestry Department announced.

Chief conservator of forests Datuk Frederick Kugan said the closure was ordered over a safety risk to visitors.

"There is a risk of (further collapse) and may pose danger to the safety of visitors," he said in a statement on Friday (Jan 17).

He said the closure took effect at 4pm on Thursday (Jan 16) and would remain in force until further notice.

"We apologise for any inconvenience to the public," he added.

Parts of Sandakan were hit by flash floods and landslides following heavy rains early Thursday.
