Johor cops foil bid to smuggle in frozen pork worth RM300,000

PASIR GUDANG: Police have thwarted an attempt to smuggle over RM300,000 worth of frozen pork into Johor.

Seri Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said police, with the cooperation of the Customs Department, detained five lorries at an ungazetted jetty near Kampung Teluk Kabung at 8.35am on Thursday (Jan 16).

“These refrigerated lorries were bringing in frozen pork smuggled from a neighbouring country.

“We also detained eight local suspects, including a woman, aged between 26 and 59, at the scene for being involved in smuggling the frozen pork,” he said here on Friday (Jan 17).

ACP Sohaimi added that police also seized 664 boxes containing frozen pork worth RM310,752 and more than RM37,000 in cash.

He said they also seized a fibreglass boat and engine as well as the five lorries, with a total estimated value of RM853,000 – bringing the total value of the seizures to over RM1.2mil.

“Further checks found that three of the suspects have criminal records," he said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967.

ACP Sohaimi also said police would continue operations against smuggling activities and warned those involved to stop or face action.

He urged anyone with information on smuggling to contact the Johor police hotline at 07-2212999.
