56 undocumented workers held in raid on Semenyih factory

PETALING JAYA: An Immigration Department raid at a factory in Semenyih led to the arrest of 56 suspected undocumented migrants.

The raid was conducted on Monday (Jan 13), Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said in a statement.

“During the raid, several foreign workers tried to escape and hide within the complex.

"The area, which was filled with wood piles, made inspections difficult but all escape attempts were successfully thwarted,” he said on Friday (Jan 17).

Most of those arrested were from Myanmar, accounting for 38 of the detainees, he added.

The authorities also arrested a male Chinese national believed to be an employer.

“Five summons to witnesses were issued to present themselves to the department to assist investigations. We will not compromise on illegal immigrants who overstay and abuse entry passes,” Zakaria added.
