Morning mist blankets Penang, obscuring iconic bridge

GEORGE TOWN: Penangites woke up to a cold, misty morning on Jan 15, creating a haze-like condition across the island.

The dense mist obscured views of the iconic Penang Bridge from the naked eye.

The mist persisted until about 10am, dissipating as temperatures rose.

Air Pollutant Index (API) readings indicated moderate air quality on both the island and mainland.

On Wednesday, Balik Pulau recorded an API of 57 and George Town registered 66 by 10am.

Mainland readings were 72 at Seberang Jaya and 68 at Seberang Perai, placing them in the "moderate" category.

API readings range from 0-50 for good, 51-100 for moderate, 101-200 for unhealthy, 201-300 for very unhealthy, and above 301 for hazardous conditions.

Meteorologists attribute the mist to an unusual dip in regional temperatures and high overnight humidity, though Penangites are simply enjoying this momentary gift from nature.
