Venues set to host Asean meetings in Penang spruced up

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) are upgrading infrastructure and enhancing urban aesthetics at venues set to host Asean meetings as part of Malaysia’s Asean chairmanship this year, says exco member H’ng Mooi Lye.

He added the two local authorities are also tasked with maintaining the areas surrounding the meeting venues to ensure they are in optimal condition.

“Preparations involve upgrading public facilities, repairing roads along the delegation routes, maintaining tourist attractions, enhancing urban landscapes, and displaying banners to warmly welcome Asean delegates,” he said yesterday, reported Bernama.

H’ng, who is state local government, town and country planning committee chairman, emphasised that MBPP and MBSP must carefully plan and execute their beautification efforts to ensure the meeting venues are presented in a safe and visually pleasing manner.

He added that several internal meetings have already been conducted to coordinate tasks and assignments for the two local authorities.

H’ng said that all coordination and assignments have been overseen and managed by the Local Government Division (BKT), with progress running smoothly to date.

A check at several locations in Penang found that Asean member nations’ flags have been prominently displayed, while digital LED boards provide information about the Asean meetings.

Malaysia officially assumed the Asean chairmanship on Jan 1, 2025, under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, reflecting the country’s aspiration of fostering a united and prosperous Asean community.
