Stop the blame, start the solutions, says Sabah group on Labuan-Kota Kinabalu ferry service issue

KOTA KINABALU: Collaboration, not blame, is key to resolving the ongoing suspension of the long-awaited Labuan-Kota Kinabalu ferry service, initially set to begin operations in mid-December.

While some have pointed to inadequate facilities at Jesselton Ferry Terminal as the cause, others have criticised Sabah authorities for allegedly being unprepared.

Calling for an end to the finger-pointing, Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Malaysia (CILTM) Sabah chairman Daniel Doughty urged all stakeholders to focus on finding solutions through constructive collaboration.

“Pointing fingers achieves nothing and only widens the divide. Now is the time for fresh dialogue and joint problem-solving to ensure this crucial ferry service becomes operational. Improved connectivity between Labuan and Sabah is vital for mutual growth,” he said.

Doughty, who also chairs the Labuan Chamber of Commerce, encouraged Labuan-based non-governmental organisations to conduct a thorough review of the timeline and circumstances surrounding the suspension before making accusations.

“A proper investigation will dispel many misconceptions and unfounded claims. The way forward is through collaboration, not criticism,” he added.

Acknowledging the significant role enhanced connectivity plays in regional economic development, CILTM Sabah pledged its support to help address the challenges and expedite the project.

“This ferry service is not just about transportation; it’s about fostering stronger ties, boosting tourism, and unlocking economic potential for both regions. Both sides must approach this issue in the spirit of partnership to overcome current hurdles,” said Doughty.

CILTM Sabah has called on all parties to put aside differences and work towards practical solutions, reaffirming its commitment to offering expertise and resources to help realise the Labuan-Kota Kinabalu ferry service.
