Shafie calls for quick defusal of WW2 bomb, reopening of Sibuan Island to tourists

KOTA KINABALU: Authorities are urged to swiftly defuse a suspected World War II bomb found in Pulau Sibuan and quickly reopen the island for tourism, says Semporna MP Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

"I urge the authorities to act swiftly to address this issue and ensure the island is safe again, as Sibuan Island is a popular destination for tourists and divers," he said in a statement on Wednesday (November 1).

He said it is important to reopen the island as prolonged closure would impact tourism and the local economy.

"We cannot afford to lose visitors because of any prolonged closure as the country is gearing up for Visit Malaysia Year 2026," said the Senallang assemblyman.

The dive tourism industry is an important part of Semporna’s economy, he said.

"I call on the relevant authorities to expedite the investigation and disposal process of the suspected bomb.

"I also request Sabah Parks and other agencies involved to provide the public with a clear and transparent timeline for when the island will be deemed safe for reopening. This will help reassure tourists and businesses that we are doing everything we can to resolve the issue," he said.

He said Semporna, home to the world-famous diving haven of Pulau Sipadan, is known for its beautiful islands and rich marine life.

Shafie added that everything possible must be done to protect this reputation and support the local economy.
