Shafee reveals letter confirming existence of 'royal addendum' to Najib's pardon during appeal proceedings

PUTRAJAYA: A letter purportedly from the Majlis Kesultanan Pahang stating that Datuk Seri Najib Razak had been granted house arrest to serve the remainder of his jail sentence was revealed to the Court of Appeal on Monday (Dec 6).

Najib's lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah produced the document in his submission in Najib's application to adduce additional evidence in his appeal relating to his claims of a royal addendum order that would allow him house arrest.

Dated Jan 4, the letter was addressed to Najib's eldest son Datuk Mohamad Nizar.

It was signed off by the Comptroller of the Royal Household of the Sultan of Pahang Datuk Ahmad Khirrizal Ab Rahman.

"With this letter, on behalf of His Royal Highness Sultan of Pahang the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, it is affirmed that the royal addendum order exists and is valid," the letter stated.

Muhammad Shafee read the letter, which bore the Majlis Kesultanan Pahang letterhead.

The letter is a crucial part of an affidavit filed by Mohd Nizar earlier in December, last year, in support of his father's appeal.

According Mohd Nizar's five-page affidavit, he claimed that the state royalty informed him of the addendum's alleged existence when he was at the Kompleks Keraf Diraja Tuanku Azizah’s launching ceremony in Pulau Keladi in Pekan, Pahang, on Aug 4 between 8pm and 9pm.

In today's proceedings, Muhammad Shafee moved to include the letter in Mohd Nizar's affidavit.

The application to adduce the additional evidence was heard alongside Najib's main appeal.

The court is expected to deliver its decision when proceedings resume at 1pm.
