QR code trial at KLIA

40 designated lanes for M’sians to clear immigration

KUALA LUMPUR: Forty designated lanes utilising QR code for immigration clearance will be launched on a trial basis at KLIA Terminal 1 and 2, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (pic).

The QR code lanes, which will only be for Malaysians, will be launched this month at the departure and arrival halls of both terminals.

“The issue of congestion at the nation’s entry points, including at KLIA, during peak periods and holidays have garnered the attention of various parties.

“For now, immigration checks at KLIA are still dependent on manual counters and the autogate system, which have limited capabilities.

“While the autogate system was introduced to expedite immigration checks, its efficiency is still a main issue causing many people to opt for the manual counters,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Thus, the ministry has decided to introduce the use of QR code for immigration checks on a trial basis this month.

“The time taken to clear immigration checks is between five and seven seconds, compared to the conventional autogate method which takes 15 to 25 seconds.

“We believe using QR code will ease congestion at the country’s main entry points, especially during peak periods.

“It will also enhance security and service efficiency through the use of the latest technology,” said Saifuddin Nasution.

“Through the QR code system, travellers are no longer required to take out their passport when going through immigration checks.

“However, it is compulsory for them to bring their passport throughout their travel.

“While QR code has been introduced, we will still have manual counters and the autogate system,” he said.
