Public involvement key to building safe communities, says Lam Thye

KUALA LUMPUR: Policymakers must enact laws that promote public involvement to get the people involved in building sustainable safe communities, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

The Alliance for a Safe Community chairman said such communities not only protect lives and property but also enhance economic growth, foster social cohesion, and improve mental well-being.

"While policies and enforcement play a critical role, safety initiatives can only succeed when the government empowers communities to take part in creating safe environments," he said when contacted on Wednesday (Jan 1).

Lee said policymakers must prioritise shared responsibility by, for example, establishing neighbourhood watch programmes, disaster preparedness planning, and corporate accountability in workplace safety.

"Provide funding for community-based safety programmes, education campaigns, and infrastructure like better street lighting, more high-definition CCTVs, and pedestrian-friendly spaces.

"Foster collaboration among government agencies, NGOs, businesses and citizens to amplify the impact of safety initiatives," he added.

"Every person deserves to live in a safe and secure environment.

"However, safety is not the job of the police or government alone – it’s a shared responsibility," he said.

He reminded the people to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.

"Join neighbourhood watch groups or volunteer for local safety initiatives.

"Adhere to road safety rules, secure your property, and avoid risky behaviour.

"Educate children and peers about the importance of safety in daily life," he said.
