A 60-YEAR-OLD woman in Jinan, China’s Shandong province, has given birth to a healthy baby boy via caesarean section, China Press reported.

This was despite her experiencing hypertension during pregnancy. For now, there is close monitoring of the newborn as he is a high-risk infant.

News of the birth led to mixed reactions online.

Some praised the mother’s ability to conceive at her age, attributing it to good health, while others were concerned about the couple’s relatively shorter remaining time to spend with their child.

> The daily also reported that the Zhengzhou government in Henan province, China, has implemented a mobile phone ban at school, making it the first city in the country to do so.

The Zhengzhou People’s Congress Standing Committee adopted the move on Dec 27 to improve the management of mobile phone use among students.

Effective immediately, students are prohibited from bringing phones or other smart devices to school. There will be exceptions, though – phone usage is allowed for educational purposes such as classroom activities.

The decision applies to students in primary, middle and ordinary high schools and vocational schools, including some adult students. If a student needs to bring a phone to school, the parents or guardians must submit a written request.

The approved phones will be managed by the school.

Schools are required to provide public telephones for emergency contact with families.
