JB planning regular neutering of stray animals

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) aims to conduct spaying and neutering programmes on a quarterly basis next year to address the issue of stray dogs here, says Mayor Datuk Mohd Noorazam Osman.

He said this was in line with MBJB’s target of spaying and neutering 1,000 stray dogs in 2025.

“The programme, in collaboration with the Social Hero Foundation and Vet Partners, will take place on Jan 7-8 involving 310 stray dogs.

“A total of 219 dogs had been spayed and neutered in an earlier programme on Oct 29-30.

“We are looking to hold the programme every quarter next year,” he said after chairing the council’s full board meeting here yesterday.

Mohd Noorazam also said 2,692 stray dogs were caught from January to November this year following 616 complaints from the public.

He added that most of the canines were either abandoned by their owners or left by workers at construction sites after the projects were completed.

“You can see many dogs at new construction sites to guard the places,” he said.

Mohd Noorazam also said the upgrading works of the council’s animal pound in Jalan Tahana, which cost RM6mil, has started and are expected to be completed next September.

He said the expansion would allow MBJB to house more stray dogs, as well as other stray animals.

He said the council received contributions, which included dog food, rabies vaccines and flea medicine worth RM142,000 from Royal Canin Malaysia, among others.
