MELAKA: The Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) enlisted the support of animal welfare groups in a renewed push to manage the historic city's growing stray dog population, with 20 dogs rescued during a three-day operation centred on humane capture and adoption.
MBMB mayor Datuk Shadan Othman said the operation, conducted from July 28 to July 31, brought together six Melaka-based animal welfare non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to help capture and rehome stray dogs within the council's jurisdiction.
He said the partnership aimed to ensure the operation was carried out humanely while allowing the rescued dogs to be adopted instead of remaining on the streets.
"The aim of involving the NGOs was to ensure the stray dogs were captured using humane methods while facilitating their adoption after they were rescued," he said when contacted on Tuesday (Aug 4).
Shadan said 20 stray dogs were successfully rescued during the operation using fencing and netting techniques.
He said the rescued dogs were immediately taken to animal shelters, where participating NGOs would care for and manage them before they were put up for adoption.
According to him, the operation was launched in response to the increasing stray dog population here, which required a coordinated approach involving both the local authority and animal welfare organisations.
Shadan added that MBMB would continue to strengthen its strategic collaboration with NGOs to better manage the stray dog population while ensuring public safety, public order and animal welfare remained a priority.
