No word yet if any M'sians in crash at Muan Airport, says Wisma Putra


PETALING JAYA: There is no confirmation yet if any Malaysians were on board South Korea's Jeju Air flight 7C2216 when it crashed, says Wisma Putra.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said it was aware of the tragic incident involving flight 7C2216, which veered off the runway on Sunday (Dec 29) and crashed at Muan International Airport in South Korea.

Media reports say there have been 47 confirmed fatalities.

"Our Embassy in Seoul is actively gathering information from official sources and is monitoring the situation.

"At the time of reporting, there is no confirmation of Malaysians involved in the incident.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time," it said.

The flight from Bangkok, with 175 passengers and six crew members on board, was attempting an emergency landing at 9.07am owing to a landing gear malfunction.

Airport authorities said the aircraft could not reduce its speed by the time it reached the end of the runway and as a result veered off, crashing into structures at the outer perimeter of the airport.
