Two UTeM students killed, two injured in North-South Expressway crash


JASIN: Two Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) students were killed and two others injured when their car crashed into a guardrail on the North-South Expressway.

Jasin OCPD Deputy Supt Ahmad Jamil Radzi confirmed that the deceased were identified as Nurul Syafiqah Nasruddin, 19, from Kampung Ulu Rokan, Gemencheh, Negri Sembilan, and Nurhanis Afryna Azizan, 19, from Felda Selancar, Muadzam Shah, Pahang.

The injured were identified as Nur Hanis Suraya Supiyan, 20, from Taman Setongkol Phase 2, Kuantan, Pahang, and Azwalidiya Azman, 21, from Kampung Baru Telok Gong, Port Klang, Selangor.

According to DSP Ahmad Jamil, the car, driven by Nur Hanis Suraya, skidded and veered into the emergency lane along KM187.6 of the northbound highway at 6.20am on Thursday (Dec 26).

Nurul Syafiqah, sitting in the front passenger seat, and Nurhanis Afryna, in the rear seat, died at the scene.

"The driver sustained leg injuries, while the other injured passenger suffered minor wounds," he said.

The four students were travelling from Johor to Melaka when the accident occurred.

DSP Ahmad Jamil said an investigation has been initiated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Meanwhile, Melaka Fire and Rescue Department officer Mohd Hanif Mustafa stated that a distress call was received at 6.23am, prompting rescue personnel from the Jasin Bestari fire station to be dispatched to the scene.

He said the injured victims were rushed to Melaka Hospital for medical treatment.
