Opposition MPs say no to sale of MAHB

PETALING JAYA: Opposition MPs are strongly against the sale of Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad (MAHB), says Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

He said this is because they are aiming to ensure it remains transparent, maintains good governance, and stays a publicly listed company on Bursa Malaysia

The Opposition leader stated that MAHB is one of the country's key strategic assets, making transparency and good governance essential.

"As the 'golden goose' and one of the nation’s key strategic assets, MAHB must remain under the ownership of the people of Malaysia," he said on Wednesday (Dec 25).

Hamzah also praised the decision by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to initiate proceedings to review and summon all parties involved in the transaction as timely and appropriate.

"The PAC's proceedings can gather detailed testimony and information from each individual involved in making decisions related to the sale of MAHB shares to external parties," he added.

On Monday (Dec 23), the PAC announced it would investigate the management of airports, including the proposed acquisition of MAHB.

PAC chairman Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said the matter should be reviewed in its proceedings before finalising the deal to ensure transparency.

Her comments followed a statement by all five of MAHB's independent directors in a circular, asserting that there were no compelling reasons for shareholders to accept the offer.
