Three-day Padang Besar traffic Op rakes in over RM170,000


PADANG BESAR: Padang Besar police have collected traffic summonses amounting to RM172,920, including errant foreign drivers fined, for the period from January to mid-December in a three-day operation held at the northern border.

Padang Besar deputy police chief Supt Sarih Salleh said among the main traffic offences were not having a driver's licence, expired road tax and insurance, no seat belt or helmet and over-loading of vehicle.

"Total collection of summonses involving foreigners is RM36,790," he said after the operation to collect outstanding summonses of foreigners (OSTWA) held at the entrance and exit of the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex here Friday (Dec 12).

Supt Sarih said the total number of outstanding summonses for the period was 3,426, with 308 involving foreigners.

"We call on all road users, including foreigners, to comply with traffic laws and immediately resolve pending fines to avoid more serious legal action," he said.

Regarding the operation, he said it started on Wednesday (Dec 11) and involved 30 police officers, while a total of 693 foreign vehicles were checked.

"Through this Op (OSTWA), we tracked down 121 vehicles with 144 summonses issued and action was taken for the settlement of fines against foreigners. Compounds collected during the three-day operation amounted to RM19,480," he said. - Bernama
