Johor immigration crackdown: Dozens detained across five districts

JOHOR BARU: More than 60 foreigners have been detained by the Johor Immigration Department in separate operations involving five districts statewide.

Its director, Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus, said they were arrested during operations at Batu Pahat, Segamat, Muar, Mersing and Johor Baru between Dec 2 and 5.

“A total of 19 men from Indonesia and Bangladesh were arrested during Ops Sapu in Batu Pahat following raids on ten houses.

“The operation comes following complaints from locals,” he said, adding that the foreigners were paying between RM200 and RM250 to rent the houses.

In Jementah, Segamat, a total of 14 foreigners were arrested during an operation at a food court in a higher learning institution.

“Several vendors at the food court were found to have been employing foreign workers illegally and without a valid business license.

“Of the 27 people who were inspected, 14 were believed to have committed immigration offences, including a man who tried to escape,” he said, adding that all of the suspects were Indonesians.

He said that the department has also arrested three foreigners from Myanmar in Muar and two Indonesian men in Mersing.

“In Johor Baru, we arrested 26 out of the 106 foreigners checked at Taman Tampoi Indah. A total of 25 premises were inspected in the area known as Little Dhaka.

“They are from Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Bangladesh,” he said, adding that those arrested during the operations in the five districts were between 18 and 55 years old.

They are being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for illegal entry into Malaysia, Section 15(1)(c) of the same Act for overstaying, Regulation 11(7)(a) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 for misusing of social visit passes.
