PUTRAJAYA: A total of 323 transmission stations across four states have been impacted by severe flooding, with 267 restored to full operation and 56 remaining non-operational as of 9am on Friday, says Fahmi Fadzil.
According to the Communication Minister, Kelantan bore the brunt of the damage, with 264 stations affected, followed by 49 in Terengganu, nine in Pahang, and one in Johor.
Fahmi said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is actively monitoring the situation to ensure swift restoration of services.
“The MCMC is evaluating the status of each station daily to track recovery progress,” Fahmi said during the ministry’s weekly press briefing here on Friday (Dec 6).
Additionally, he said 91 National Information Dissemination Centres (Nadi) were disrupted by the floods.
“Out of these, 81 have resumed operations, while 10 remain offline. Efforts are ongoing to bring these facilities back to full functionality.”
The minister also highlighted the number of evacuees at 96 temporary relief centres, which currently stands at 25,599 people.
As of 9am on Friday (Dec 6), he said 120 relief centres remain operational, though some have since closed as conditions improve.
“Deputy Communication Minister Teo Nie Ching is en route to Raub with an MCMC team to assist in post-flood clean-up efforts and address telecommunication issues on the ground,” Fahmi added.
In a proactive step, he said 23 relief centres have been equipped with free Wi-Fi, ensuring that evacuees have access to communication services.
Fahmi assured that MCMC remains prepared to address any future telecommunication challenges should flooding recur.
