Relocation of Yong Peng High School under legal review, says minister

KUALA LUMPUR: The legal aspects of Yong Peng High School's relocation are still under review, says the Education Minister.

Fadhlina Sidek stated that her ministry is currently examining the relocation registration certificate application and terms as stipulated in existing law.

"This is to ensure that the relocation complies with the Education Act," she said while concluding the Education Ministry’s Budget 2025 discussions at the committee stage in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Dec 3).

Fadhlina was responding to questions from Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (Barisan Nasional-Ayer Hitam), who noted that the relocation of Yong Peng High School has been pending since 2018.

During the debate, Dr Wee also inquired about the latest status of proposed projects for SRJK (C) Kuek Ho Yao and SRJK (C) Sim Mow You, which have also faced delays.

Fadhlina mentioned that the project drawings are being reviewed by the ministry through several existing disciplines before being handed over to the Johor Education Department by Dec 13.

"Afterwards, this matter will be handed over to the temporary construction committee of SRJK(C) Kuek Ho Yao for further actions," she said.

Earlier, Dr Wee highlighted that the groundbreaking ceremony for the proposed SRJK(C) Kuek Ho Yao took place in March 2018, attended by then education minister Dr Maszlee Malik, who assured the project's progress.

"Because of this, the school made an appeal to the ministry requesting the development plans.

"The plans were submitted in August this year," Dr Wee said in the Dewan Rakyat.

He added that RM12mil in contributions have been collected for the school's development.
