RM22.5mil to repair flood-damaged roads in Kelantan, says Ahmad Maslan

KOTA BHARU: The cost of repairing federal and state roads damaged by floods in Kelantan is estimated at RM22.5mil, said Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

He said that 12 flood-affected locations along federal roads had suffered eight landslides, two road shoulder collapses, and two road sinkholes, with repair costs estimated at RM16mil.

"For state roads, there are four affected locations, resulting in two road collapses, one damaged road shoulder, and one road sinkhole, with repair costs estimated at RM6.5mil,” he told reporters at the state Public Works Department office here on Monday (Dec 2).

Ahmad said funding would be sought through additional allocations from the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) as the damage was caused by a disaster, noting that repairs usually take around three months to complete.

"There are multiple waves of floods...wave one, two, and three. We must wait and see over the next few weeks because if repairs are carried out too early, subsequent flooding could undo the work," he said.

Ahmad said the ongoing Northeast Monsoon this year has not affected the progress of major projects in the state, such as the Central Spine Road (CSR) and Jalan Kota Bharu-Kuala Krai Road.

"When awarding related projects, we account for the Northeast Monsoon in the timelines given to contractors for projects such as schools, bridges, police stations, and health centres.

"For example, the stadium for the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Bukit Merbau Pasir Putih is expected to be completed in 2026 and the Bachok hospital started operations yesterday," he said. - Bernama
