Daim's widow urges MACC to stop investigation on late husband

KUALA LUMPUR: The widow of Tun Daim Zainuddin is urging the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to cease its investigation into her late husband as he has been acquitted.

Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid was also critical of the MACC for announcing that it would continue its probe barely a week after Daim's death and just two days after his acquittal.

"Section 23 of the MACC Act pertains to the misuse of office or position for personal gratification. The MACC is also investigating a money trail overseas.

"The courts have acquitted Daim. To investigate a 'money trail', there must first be an offence of corruption. If no offence has been committed, then any assets held in Malaysia or elsewhere are lawful and the fruits of hard work," she said in a statement on Saturday (Nov 30).

Na'imah also claimed that the MACC had yet to provide details about the offence said to have been committed.

"Since mid-2023, Daim had written repeatedly to the MACC chief commissioner seeking clarification on the alleged offence. Until his death, no answer was forthcoming," she said, adding that she and her late husband had "endured sustained persecution".

On Nov 20, Daim was acquitted by the Sessions Court by Judge Azura Alwi under Section 254(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC), as applied for by the prosecution.

The former finance minister passed away on Nov 13 at age 86.
