'Kelantan floods worse than 2014's 'bah kuning' disaster' (with picture gallery)

KOTA BARU: Residents here are say the floods Kelantan is experiencing now are worse than the 'Bah Kuning' (yellow-coloured floods, caused by high mud content in the water) disaster in 2014.

Kampung Kota Jembal resident Abdullah Zawawi Che Mat, 59, said heavy rain had been falling for three days which caused his house to be flooded with up to one metre of water.

He said this brings back painful memories of the 2014 incident which caused Kelantan to be almost completely paralysed at that time, with 202,000 people displaced.

"Continuous rain since Tuesday forced me to pack up and place important items and documents in higher spots.

"In 2014, my house was flooded with about 0.6m of water but this time floods occured after just two days of rain, causing the house to be inundated with water reaching one metre," he said at Kampung Kota Jembal here on Thursday (Nov 28).

Abdullah Zawawi also said there is only one drainage system in the area and water levels take a long time to recede.

"If a flood occurs involving the more than 30 villages here, floodwaters can only pass through one drainage system," he said.

A survey of the settlement showed several villages including Kampung Chepa, Kampung Beris Arab, Kampung Kubang Badak, Kampung Seman, Kampung Tok Kambing and Kampung Senang were flooded with water reaching 0.5m to 1m. – Bernama
