Digital Ministry is developing a new policy to foster SME technology adoption

KUALA LUMPUR: A policy, aimed at empowering small and medium enterprises (SME) to embrace and adopt digitisation, is currently in the works, says the Digital Ministry.

Its minister, Gobind Singh Deo, said it is currently in the discussion phase as SMEs fall under the Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Ministry.

“We are discussing ways to establish a new policy on what initiatives can be taken and how SMEs can adopt technology.

“Another aspect is how we can establish a more cost-effective environment for SMEs to utilise technology,” he told a press conference after attending the launch of the Impact Study of AI, Digital and Green Economy on the Malaysian Workforce by Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp) on Monday (Nov 18).

Gobind said this in response to a question raised after he had briefly touched on it during a panel discussion during the launch.

He said the policy is also scheduled to be finalised by this year.

“I am having discussions with various quarters on this, and I hope we can discuss how to move forward by the end of the year,” he added.

Gobind said the launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Office is set for Dec 12, 2024.

“The Digital Ministry will head this. One of the aspects we will focus on is preparing sufficient talents for future AI challenges,” he said, adding that engagements will be held with various stakeholders to fulfil this.

“We want to ensure Malaysia is ready for new technologies,” he said.
