Tamil calligraphy featured at convention

Works of Tamil calligraphy by a Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) lecturer were among the highlights of a colloquial language convention hosted by the National Archives of Malaysia, Makkal Osai reported.

The two-day event held in Bandar Baru Bangi saw various talks and dialogues on the role of colloquial languages in national development.

The Tamil calligraphy works by the university’s Faculty of Design and Architecture senior lecturer Dr Velu Perumal were on display as part of the exhibition.

Among the items on display were portraits of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang.

Aaron Ago, who officiated the event, said he was impressed by the calligraphy works. He also received his portrait as a gift from Velu.

Archives director Datuk Jaafar Sidek Abdul Rahman, who addressed the event, said the agency will work to preserve the linguistic heritage of all communities in the country.

The convention and exhibition was part of that effort, he added.
