JPJ seizes 26 motorcycles, issues 283 summonses during illegal racing ops in KL

PETALING JAYA: A total of 283 summonses were issued and 26 motorcycles seized, while 80 individuals were inspected in a special operation against illegal street racing along the Duta–Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE) on Sunday (April 12).

Kuala Lumpur Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Hamidi Adam said the operation, carried out by the Falcon Unit, was conducted from 3am to 5am following persistent public complaints.

The integrated operation also involved cooperation with the police, the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), as well as highway concessionaire KESTURI, following coordination after a special meeting held earlier.

“Monitoring found that areas around Batu Muda, Greenwood and Sri Gombak have been identified as hotspots for illegal racing activities, especially during weekends.

“Among the main complaints received were large gatherings disrupting public order, the use of highways as illegal racing tracks, dangerous riding behaviour, as well as excessive noise from modified vehicles,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (April 14).

He added that it was more worrying as teenagers as young as 13 to 14 years old were found to be involved, with most parents unaware of their children’s participation in such risky activities.

“We urge parents to monitor their children’s movements, not allow them to be involved in risky activities, and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities,” he said.

He said inspections also uncovered various serious offences, including the absence of side mirrors, as well as missing or improperly displayed registration numbers.

Other violations included the use of non-compliant “fancy” registration plates, using registration numbers belonging to other vehicles, extreme exhaust modifications, the absence of rear brakes, and missing engine numbers.

“Some individuals also acted aggressively and attempted to flee from enforcement action.

“The cost of modifying motorcycles involved is estimated to reach up to RM10,000 purely for illegal racing purposes,” he said.

Hamidi stressed that all enforcement actions were taken under the Road Transport Act 1987 to ensure the safety of road users.

“JPJ views this activity seriously as it not only violates the law but also endangers lives and threatens the safety of other road users.

He added that JPJ, together with relevant agencies, will continue to intensify integrated operations from time to time to ensure DUKE and its surrounding areas remain safe and free from illegal street racing activities.
