Penang tunnel project studies incomplete due to port expansion plans

KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry reports that the feasibility studies for the Penang undersea tunnel project have not yet been completed.

In a parliamentary written reply on Nov 5, the ministry explained that the delay was due to several factors, including the planned expansion of Butterworth Port.

"Any tunnel construction project, be it for vehicles both on land and undersea, as well as the construction of infrastructure such as bridges, highways and such roads are under the purview of the Works Ministry," it stated.

The proposed undersea tunnel aims to link George Town and Seberang Perai to alleviate congestion in the state.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow mentioned in May that the undersea tunnel was now under review to accommodate the Penang Port expansion plans, which were part of the Penang Port Commission’s development plan.
