Foreigner dies after leaping from bridge at Johor CIQ complex


JOHOR BARU: A foreigner was killed after jumping from a pedestrian bridge in an attempt to evade immigration inspection at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex here.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the police were alerted by the public about the incident involving a Sri Lankan man in his 30s at about 4.48pm on Thursday (Oct 31).

"The man, who works as a factory operator, was believed to have jumped from the pedestrian bridge that was connecting BSI and Johor Baru Sentral.

"Initial investigation suggests that his actions were an attempt to avoid immigration checks at the CIQ," he said in a statement on Facebook last night.

He added that the man landed on a car that was passing by the area under the pedestrian bridge.

The man was later pronounced dead by an assistant medical officer from Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA).

"There were no criminal elements found in the incident, and the case has been classified as a sudden death," he said, adding that the victim's body has been taken to HSA for autopsy.

ACP Raub also urged those with information about the incident to contact the Johor Baru South police headquarters hotline at 07-2182323.

Earlier on Thursday, social media was abuzz after photos and videos related to the incident at the BSI CIQ went viral.
