Perak Bomba conducts emergency simulation in preparation for northeast monsoon

IPOH: The Perak Fire and Rescue Department’s efforts to prepare for the northeast monsoon season are ongoing, says its director Sayani Saidon.

She said they are now conducting a large-scale rural emergency disaster exercise (Redex) as part of its preparations.

Sayani said the exercise followed a coordinated workflow under the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) Directive No. 1.

"The (relevant) agencies can experience the workflow through this large-scale simulation.

"This is a preparation for a real-life incident. Should it occur, the Perak agencies are prepared to handle it," she said during the Redex in Tanjung Rambutan here on Wednesday (Oct 30).

Three disaster scenarios were simulated during the four-day Redex that started on Oct 26.

These included a scenario in which the water from the Sultan Azlan Shah Dam overflowed and inundated nearby villages, a chlorine leakage at the dam and a search and rescue operation for stranded climbers at Mount Korbu.

The police, Kinta District and Land Office, the Health Department, and the Civil Defense Force were the other participating agencies.

Sayani said the simulation exercise was the first, and plans are to organise it more often.

“We plan to have it maybe annually," she said, adding that the department's assets, including air, land and marine units, were mobilised for the exercise.
