1MDB culprits took advantage of Najib's sincere wish to help people, says Umno veep

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Razak's apology to Malaysians over the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal during his tenure is sincere, says Umno vice president Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail.

He said he was convinced that Najib's statement came from the heart and reflected the former prime minister's good intentions, of which others took advantage.

"I believe the statement also clarifies that throughout his tenure as prime minister, Najib always thought only about what was best for the people, to the extent that some irresponsible parties took advantage of his concern for the people's welfare.

"His public apology to Malaysians is not about seeking sympathy but rather reflects the actions of a person with a big heart," said Wan Rosdy, who is also Pahang Mentri Besar, in a statement late Thursday night (Oct 24).

He also prayed and hoped that justice would be upheld by bringing the real mastermind of the 1MDB scandal to court.

On Thursday (Oct 24), Najib apologised to all Malaysians over the 1MDB scandal which occurred when he was prime minister and finance minister.

In a statement read by his son Datuk Mohd Nizar Najib at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex, Najib said he decided to issue it after much reflection during his 26 months in jail and following significant recent developments relating to 1MDB.

Najib expressed “deep shock” over the extent of the multi-billion ringgit scandal but maintained that recent evidence supported his claim that he did not collaborate with fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low.
