Political stability must align with good governance to boost economy, says Anwar


KOTA KINABALU: Political stability must be aligned with good governance to effectively address issues concerning the people and drive the national economy, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister emphasised that good governance not only enables the formulation of clear policies but also helps prevent abuse of power and corruption.

"After years of political turbulence, we have achieved stability in the last two years. However, stability alone is not enough; we need good governance by responsible leaders to rid the country of corruption and misuse of power.

"With political stability, we have crafted policies that benefit everyone and cater to each region in this country.

"I have assured that what is required by the state and community will be deemed fair, and we will continue to support without fear or favour, as reflected in yesterday's Budget presentation," he said at the opening of the Sabah International Blue Economy Conference (SIBEC) 2024 on Saturday (Oct 19).

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor was also present.

Anwar noted that political stability and clear government policies have enabled initiatives like SIBEC 2024 to be pursued, strengthening Sabah’s economy, which was once primarily known for its timber industry, in addition to industrialisation and food security.

The Prime Minister encouraged academicians and experts, especially in the blue economy field at local universities like Universiti Malaysia Sabah, to be directly involved in discussions related to the industry.

"The blue economy initiative is a new focus, and not all regions can fully benefit from this blue ocean economy, but Sabah is uniquely positioned to do so. Alhamdulillah, Sabah can achieve greater heights by focusing on this issue, embracing broader, inclusive, and sustainable development," he said, pledging full support for Sabah's economic growth and its blue economy initiative. – Bernama
