Dramatic protest disrupts Azam Baki keynote at WTC

KUALA LUMPUR: A keynote address by Tan Sri Azam Baki was briefly disrupted when two men stormed into a hall carrying banners during an event at the World Trade Centre (WTC) here.

The incident occurred while the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner was delivering his keynote speech at the Wacana Ilmiah Perdana programme on Tuesday (April 7).

Tension rose in the hall when one of the individuals shouted and rushed towards the front of the stage, causing a brief commotion among attendees.

Security personnel acted swiftly to contain the situation, escorting the man out of the hall. Another individual was seen standing at the back, displaying a banner.

Despite the disruption, Azam remained composed and handled the situation professionally, even lightening the mood with a spontaneous remark.

“Don’t switch your TV channel,” he quipped, before continuing his speech.

Reporters at the scene observed that both individuals were wearing T-shirts bearing the word “Mandiri”.

It is understood that the same group plans to hold a gathering on April 25 at Dataran Merdeka, calling for a more thorough and transparent investigation into issues surrounding Azam’s alleged shareholding, as well as claims of a corporate mafia said to have affected the MACC’s reputation.

Further details on the individuals and whether any arrests were made were not immediately available.
