PETALING JAYA: A new law is being mulled that will compel habitual litterers to do community cleaning, says the Housing and Local Government Ministry.
Minister Nga Kor Ming (pic) said the law, dubbed the Social Work Order, will see those repeatedly convicted of littering not only fined but also made to clean roads and drains.

“Cleanliness is everyone’s responsibility. All Malaysians have an education. Civic awareness is compulsory.
“If you don’t like rubbish in your house, you shouldn’t throw it everywhere,” he told reporters after launching a campaign to curb single-use plastics at a shopping complex here on Thursday (Sept 26).
Nga said those facing these penalties will also be given a special uniform in which to perform their tasks.

“This is no laughing matter. This is the Madani administration’s commitment to make Malaysia cleaner,” he said.
He also pointed out how Malaysia is holding the Asean chairmanship next year, which will see international leaders and representatives visiting the country.

“It is our responsibility to be cleanliness ambassadors and show our best image.
“Following that, there is also Visit Malaysia Year 2026,” he said.
