PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across eight states as well as Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, effective until 3pm on Thursday (July 23).
In the northern region, the weather alert covers the entire state of Pulau Pinang. Affected areas in Kedah include Yan, Pendang, Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu, while Perak will see storms in Kerian as well as Larut, Matang Dan Selama.
On the east coast, severe weather is expected in Rompin, Pahang.
In the central region, the warning covers a major portion of Selangor, affecting Kuala Selangor, Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat and Sepang, alongside both Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.
Further south, the alert extends to several areas in Negeri Sembilan (Seremban, Port Dickson, Rembau and Tampin), the entire state of Melaka, and several districts in Johor, namely Tangkak, Segamat, Muar, Batu Pahat and Kluang.
MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.
A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
The notice was officially issued by the department at 11.25am on Thursday.
