Action needed to protect children in childcare, says Lee Lam Thye

KUALA LUMPUR: Immediate action is necessary to ensure the safety of every child, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, following a recent series of child abuse cases in childcare centres.

The chairman of the Alliance for a Safe Community said that these incidents highlight a critical need for systemic change and urgent action.

"It's not enough to simply express outrage; we must implement measures that ensure the safety and well-being of every child," he said when contacted on Saturday (September 21).

Lee added that parents play a vital role in safeguarding their children.

"They should not hesitate to question, observe, and actively engage in their children's care. Open communication with their children is essential, and parents must trust their instincts if something feels wrong," he said.

Lee said that the government needs to step up and introduce stricter regulations and enforcement.

"Background checks for all childcare staff and unannounced inspections must be mandatory. We need a system that punishes abusers and prevents future offences," he added.

Lee added that childcare centres have a moral obligation to be transparent and accountable.

"They should communicate openly with parents and have clear policies for dealing with complaints. They must also invest in comprehensive staff training," he said.

Lee said that communities have a supporting role in child protection.

"NGOs and support groups provide invaluable resources, and we should create a network of support that strengthens the safety culture," he added.

Lee then said that what is needed is to create a new standard where children's safety and trust are paramount.

"The scars of abuse are deep, but we can overcome them with a collective force for change," he added.
