Tamil student wins Malay public speaking competition

A STUDENT from SJK (T) Kamunting has won the national-level Malay public speaking competition for vernacular schools, Makkal Osai reported.

Tharani Subramaniam from the Perak school emerged champion of the Pidato Aspirasi Generasi Madani 2024 competition organised by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP).

The event which took place at the DBP Hall in Kuala Lumpur saw 15 finalists representing their states and territories with the winner taking home RM1,000 in prize money.

Tharani, who is the daughter of Taiping city councillor and PTA chairman of the Kamunting Tamil school Subramaniam Ramanathan, and teacher Theeba, had won the Larut-Matang district and Perak state-level competitions to qualify for the final.

Headmistress Umadevi Rengasamy said the win was made possible by teachers Thavamalar Thevendra and Mohd Atif Mohd Arshad, who helped train her and the support of the parents.

Tharani also had the memorable experience of receiving her medal and certificate from Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, who attended as guest of honour.
