Park in KK shut after otter attack

KOTA KINABALU: The operator of Tanjung Aru’s Perdana Park here has temporarily closed the recreational park after several visitors were attacked by a bevy of otters.

A notice of the closure has been circulating on social media, followed by an announcement by the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK).

The order for closure was issued by DBKK in response to an incident on Wednesday morning where three people were attacked by the animals.

Mayor Datuk Seri Sabdin Samitah confirmed that a notice was given to the park operator to suspend activities until further notice.

He stressed that the closure is necessary to ensure public safety while DBKK, in collaboration with relevant agencies, conducts an investigation.

Sabah Wildlife Department director Roland Niun said this is the first otter attack reported in the state.

“It is unusual for this generally harmless animal to exhibit such aggression,” he said.

“However, otters tend to be aggressive when they feel threatened or provoked.”
