PM’s ex-aide Yusoff Rawther charged with trafficking cannabis


KUALA LUMPUR: Former research assistant Muhammed Yusoff Rawther has been charged at the Magistrate's Court here with trafficking 305g of cannabis Thursday (Sept 12).

The 31-year-old pledged his innocence in the courtroom.

“I am innocent. I am framed by those in power," he said from the dock.

According to the charge sheet, Muhammed Yusoff allegedly trafficked cannabis in front of the carpark of Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters surau at about 10.15am on Sept 6.

He was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39(B(2) which carries a lifetime imprisonment and whipping not less than 12 strokes.

Muhammed Yusoff nodded and said he understood the charge after it was read out before Magistrate M.S Arunjothy.

No plea was taken from the accused as the trafficking offence is under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Sabri Othman sought for a mention date pending the results of the chemical report.

The court fixed Nov 12 for mention.

Muhammed Yusoff was represented by lawyer Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali.

Muhammad Rafique is expected to hold a press conference later today.
