KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak is set to co-host the 2027 SEA Games regardless of Sabah’s decision on the matter, says Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
The Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts of Sarawak said the Borneon state will leave the matter at the discretion of the Youth and Sports Ministry.
“We are still discussing this but we have been informed by KBS (Youth and Sports Ministry) and the federal government that we (Sarawak) will be the co-host.
“About the participation of other states, we will discuss this later.
“We have agreed to co-host and regarding whether or not Sabah will do the same, that will be determined in the meetings between all of us with KBS and the federal government,” he said.
Abdul Karim said this in a press conference after the opening ceremony of the Matta Fair at Mitec building here on Saturday (Sept 7).
Also present was Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Christina Liew.
Earlier in his speech, Abdul Karim said Sarawak’s participation as a co-host in the SEA Games will further elevate the state on the global sporting map.
Aside from the SEA Games, he said Sarawak will also be hosting other international sporting events such as the Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup, where the state will co-host 10 ICC matches in January 2025.
“These prestigious events will not only bring athletes, officials, and fans from around the world but also present an excellent opportunity to showcase Sarawak’s unique culture, breathtaking landscapes, and unmatched hospitality,” he added.
Last week, the Youth and Sports Ministry announced that Malaysia had accepted the offer to hold the 2027 SEA Games, with Penang, Sabah and Sarawak agreeing to co-host the event with Kuala Lumpur.
On Wednesday (Sept 4), Sabah finance minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the state government has not made any financial commitment to co-hosting the 2027 SEA Games given its inadequate sports facilities.
On Thursday (Sept 5), Sabah Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin said the state government has agreed to consider co-hosting the 2027 SEA Games.
According to Ellron, the state cabinet unanimously agreed to this during a meeting chaired by chief minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, after weighing the various aspects involved in co-hosting the regional sports event.
