KTMB finalising high-tech CCTV network to curb rail vandalism

KUALA LUMPUR: Plans to install high-tech surveillance systems, including CCTV networks, across Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) rail tracks are in their final stages, says chief executive officer Datuk Azlan Shah Al Bakri.

KTMB is working alongside the Railway Assets Corporation to finalise data integration and connect the monitoring hardware to itsfibre-opticc rail lines.

“We are currently at the final stages. Installation has begun alongside tapping into our lines. Now, we are finalising the data plans,” Azlan Shah said after distributing 600 Deepavali gift packs with Deputy National Unity Minister R. Yuneswaran at KL Sentral on Monday (Nov 2).

“Our auxiliary police officers are also working hard on the ground to ensure commuters have a safe and comfortable journey.”

The upgraded surveillance comes after an object thrown between Arau and Kodiang shattered a window on the Padang Besar–Butterworth KTM Komuter, forcing Train No. 2951 out of service for overnight repairs at the Bukit Tengah Depot.

KTMB confirmed a police report has been filed and warned that stone-throwing endangers lives and carries severe legal penalties.

Under Section 132 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010, offenders face fines of up to RM25,000, imprisonment for up to 10 years, or both. KTMB urged the public to report any suspicious activity along its tracks immediately.
